Using Mitaka Municipal Libraries

Foreign-language materials

In addition to materials in Japanese, the Mitaka Municipal Libraries also have materials in other languages, ranging from general interest books to children’s picture books.We also subscribe to English and Chinese language magazines and newspapers.
Please confirm availability with library staff beforehand if you wish to use foreign language materials.

First-time Users

The City of Mitaka has six municipal libraries and one mobile library, Himawari-Go.You are required to register before you can check out any books.
You can complete registration procedures at a counter of any library or in the mobile library, Himawari-Go.
You will also need to create a password yourself if you wish to reserve materials, etc.

Registration

Eligibility

Anyone who resides in Mitaka city or any of the neighboring municipal areas, or attends a school or college, or works, there.

Neighboring municipal areas = Musashino-shi / Koganei-shi / Chofu-shi
Nishitokyo-shi / Suginami-ku / Setagaya-ku

What You Need to Register

  • Registration Form for Personal-Use Borrowers & Notification of Change (please ask our staff at a counter at any of library)
  • Proof of address (Residence Card, health insurance card, student identification card, driver’s license, residence certificate, etc.)
  • Proof that you attend a school or college, or work, in Mitaka-shi or a neighboring municipal area, if applicable.

Library Card

  • Library cards can only be used by the person to whom the card is registered.
  • Library cards can be used at all Mitaka Municipal Library branches.
  • Library cards are valid for 2 years from the date of registration and must be renewed every 2 years.

Changes to Registration Information

If you have already registered as a member and changed your address, name, telephone number, etc.please submit a Registration Form for Personal-Use Borrowers & Notification of Change.

Use of Libraries

Borrowing

Please use the self-checkout terminals located in libraries when you wish to check out any materials.

Books and Magazines

You may borrow a total of 15 items per person for a maximum of 2 weeks.

CDs

You may borrow a total of 3 CDs per person for a maximum of 2 weeks.

  • Mitaka Ekimae Library houses a collection of CDs.

The total number of items is calculated by adding up the number of items checked out from all Mitaka Municipal Library branches.

Lost Cards

To have your library card reissued you are required to complete the same registration procedures as for when your card was initially issued at a counter in any Mitaka Municipal Library branch, or in the mobile library Himawari-Go.Please bring the Registration Form for Personal-Use Borrowers and proof of ID and address, etc.

Returns

Books & Magazines

You may return borrowed items to any of the Mitaka Municipal Libraries (all 6 branches and the mobile library, Himawari-Go).Please use the self check-in terminals located in libraries.You do not need your library card to check in materials.
Outside of business hours, please return borrowed items using the book drop at each branch (please note that book drops cannot be used during business hours).

Audiovisual Materials & Materials with Supplements

Please return CDs in person at a counter at any library branch.
In order to prevent breakage and accidents, borrowers are not permitted to use book drops to return materials with CD-ROMs labeled “Please return to a counter,” so please return them in person to staff at a counter in any branch.

Other

You will be prevented from reserving any materials if you have any overdue library items.Furthermore, if you have borrowed anything that is more than 2 weeks overdue you will be prevented from borrowing any additional materials until you return the overdue items.We kindly request that you please ensure to return all items by the due date.

Due Date Extension

You may extend the due date for borrowed materials using the search PCs in libraries or over the Internet through the Mitaka Municipal Library website before the due date.

You cannot extend the due date period for overdue items, reserved items, or items from a library administered by another municipal government.

Reservations

You can reserve materials through user terminals in libraries or through the library website.After searching for the item you want to reserve by the title or the author, click on the “Reserve” button.Instructions on the screen are in Japanese, so please ask counter staff for assistance if anything is unclear.

Prior registration of your e-mail address is required before you reserve items through our website.You can complete e-mail registration through My Page.

You can reserve new books or the latest issue of a magazine from the date when libraries release it for borrowing.

Searches

You can search for materials in Mitaka Municipal Libraries by title and author, etc.using the search PCs located in libraries.You can also search for the materials through the library website.

Loss, Damage, or Soilage

Please submit the form Report of the Loss of Library Materials to the library where the item was borrowed.Please ask staff at a counter at any Mitaka Municipal Library or the mobile library, Himawari-Go, if you require a form.
In principle you will be required to provide compensation by providing a replacement of the same item.

Other Services

Internet-Connected Computers

Internet-connected computers are located in libraries to enable library users to carry out searches.These computers can be used free of charge.

Computers cannot be used for games or shopping, etc.Additionally, storage media such as CD-ROMs cannot be used with these computers and they cannot be used for printing.

Copying Service

You may use the pay-copy machines provided by the Mitaka Municipal Libraries within the limits of the Copyright Act.

The Mitaka Municipal Libraries ensure appropriate handling of personal information in the process of collection, usage, and management of personal data in accordance with the Mitaka City Ordinances on Protection of Personal Information.
Corrected personal information is not to be used or provided beyond the scope of utilization purposes stipulated in the “Mitaka City Protection of Personal Information Municipal Ordinance.
